Electricity grids are key elements of energy policies aiming to support socioeconomic prosperity. We aspire to be a catalyst for a successful energy transition by contributing to the development of f a reliable, sustainable and affordable energy system. By building interconnectors and integrating renewable energy generation into our grids, we are promoting both the integration of the European energy market and the decarbonisation of society.
The energy transition will result in renewable energy generation being deployed on a large scale. End consumers are playing an increasingly central role in the system providing additional flexibility for its operation.
We are actively supporting the development of renewable energy through the development of our grid on- and offshore for the integration of renewable energy generation. In that respect we collaborate with the Renewables Grid Initiative (RGI) providing an unique collaboration between grid operators and NGO’s in order to support the need for grid. or Friends of Sustainable Grids, which promotes the creation of a European supergrid as a solution for facilitating the exchange of renewable energy between generating countries. Becoming a sustainable company
Our sustainability strategy is based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Over the past year, we have defined 5 areas of action, or 5 main dimensions of sustainability that include combating climate change, managing environmental impact and increasing biodiversity, integrating diversity and inclusion, guaranteeing the safety of our employees and assuring sound and good governance, ethics and compliance.
Our internal sustainability programme "Act Now" has defined measurable objectives. These will be further integrated into our strategy and will help determine what we do and the decisions we take. Because, as a grid manager, we are an important catalyst for the energy transition, we strongly believe sustainability must be embedded in all our activities.
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing Society. Since Elia Group is enabling and facilitating the energy transition, sustainability is already at the core of our strategy. With the ACT NOW initiative, Elia Group has defined concrete and measurable targets related to how we will embed sustainability in our business processes.
