Connecting to our grid
Submitting a connection request is the first step towards connecting your electrical facilities to our grid. What does the request process entail?
Any producer or customer wanting to connect an electrical facility must submit a request for a connection or for an alteration to an existing connection. Elia will consider the request based on the information provided by the requester.
Preliminary study (optional)
Before commissioning an in-depth study , the requester can ask for a preliminary study. This study sets out the technical options for the connection and the estimated costs involved.-
Procedure
The requester selects 'Preliminary study' on the connection request form. They must then enter the technical specifications required to conduct the study. Once any attachments have been added, the form is sent to Elia by email. Elia may request any additional information it needs to complete the preliminary study.

The cost of an in-depth study is based on the applicable tariffs .
The studies conducted by Elia as part of the connection process are subject to the general terms and conditions, which are applied in a non-discriminatory way.
In-depth study
An in-depth study sets out the technical solutions and the associated costs .-

The connection of disruptive facilities is also subject to a power quality study.
Power quality
In accordance with the provisions of the grid codes, Elia ensures that the voltage at the connection point satisfies the requirements of standard EN 50160.

1 Power quality study

Procedure
Elia’s prior agreement is required for the connection of new disruptive or compensatory facilities and for any modifications to facilities that may affect power quality. Depending on the type of equipment involved and its nominal capacity, Elia will decide whether a power quality study is required.

2 Power quality acceptance tests

Procedure
When new disruptive facilities are commissioned or modified, Elia may carry out acceptance tests to check the amount of disruption they cause. Once the tests are complete, Elia will provide the grid user with a report containing the key measurements recorded and the test results.

3 Power quality monitoring

Procedure
Elia or the customer may arrange for monitoring of the power quality at the connection points of any disruptive facilities and compensatory equipment that may jeopardise the quality of the power. This is known as power quality monitoring.

4 Special services available upon request: Power quality and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)

Studies to optimise compensation, taking into account tariffs and power quality

Power quality monitoring at the customer's connection point or facilities

Tailor-made advice regarding various power quality or EMC problems, identifying problems and finding the best solution for the customer

Advice regarding the safeguarding of sensitive processes and facilities, with a view to protecting critical facilities from the effects of voltage dips and interruptions
