Dying Light 2 delayed, no new release window given
Techland drops spring release target for open-world zombie shooter, says it will have more details "in the coming months"
Another of this spring's anticipated releases has been delayed. Techland CEO Pawel Marchewka today released a statement on the Dying Light 2 Twitter account to say that the game would not be making its previously announced launch window.
"We were initially aiming for a Spring 2020 release with Dying Light 2, but unfortunately we need more development time to fulfill our vision," Marchewka said. "We will have more details to share in the coming months, and will get back to you as soon as we have more information. We apologize for this unwelcome news. Out priority is to deliver an experience that lives up to our own high standards and to the expectations of you, our fans."
The statement gave no information about a new release window for the game.
This is the latest in a string of delays for big games that had been expected to launch early this year. Last week, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics revealed delays to Final Fantasy VII Remake and Marvel's Avengers. Final Fantasy VII Remake was bumped just a month to April while Avengers was pushed back to September, where it will run into another big game that was delayed last week, CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077.
The delays started to pile up last October when Ubisoft pushed Gods and Monsters, Rainbow Six Quarantine, and Watch Dogs: Legion out of its current fiscal year (which ends June 30, 2020). On the same day, Sony announced a delay to The Last of Us Part II, pushing its release back from February 2020 to May 29, 2020.
After Techland posted about the Dying Light 2 delay, NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella noted the trend of delays on Twitter, saying, "Let's hope the evergreen console titles out there can get evergreen-er or else it could be quite a bumpy 1H."
