Project to upgrade the 380-kV Gramme-Rimière line
As part of the energy transition, this project will upgrade the 380-kV overhead line between the Gramme substation in Huy and the Rimière substation in Neupré. The upgrade consists of installing a second three-phase transmission line (electrical circuit) on the current infrastructure.

Benefits to society
The ongoing energy transition means that Belgium's energy landscape is constantly evolving, both in terms of generation sources (renewables, fossil fuels, etc.) and consumption (electrification of society, new consumers, etc.). This is a far-reaching change to which all electricity market players must adapt.
As transmission system operator, Elia plays a key role in making this change a success with a view to creating a sustainable, environmentally friendly world in which to bring about the energy transition. This project dovetails perfectly with the energy transition.

The route
Built in 1976, the 380-kV Gramme-Rimière line connects the Gramme substation to the Rimière substation and is considered one of the backbones of Belgium's high-voltage grid. Currently consisting of one three-phase transmission line (electrical circuit) and 34 pylons, the line stretches some 14 km and crosses the municipal territory of Huy, Modave, Nandrin and Neupré.

Environment
As a socially responsible company, Elia is deeply committed to the environment. It contributes actively to the energy transition and is particularly concerned with preserving biodiversity. It also works closely with local authorities, local residents and all local stakeholders affected by its infrastructure projects as it expands and upgrades its grid.
CSD Engineers, an independent, external consultancy approved by the Walloon Region, has been tasked with analysing the environmental impact of the project. The resulting environmental impact assessment (EIA) will analyse aspects related both to the project and to the future operation of the line, and its findings will be included in the planning permit application.

Provisional project schedule:
- October 2021: advance public information meeting
- October 2021: start of the environmental impact assessment
- Early 2022: submission of permit application
- Early 2022: public consultation
- Mid-2022: decision expected on permit application
- Begin 2023 until begin 2025: Works

Following the holding of the Preliminary Information Meeting and the completion of the Environmental Impact Assessment, the entire application submitted by Elia can be consulted during the period of the public consultation in the municipal administrations affected by the project.
