Gramme-Rimière 150-kV line

Given the changing needs of the regional economy and increased generation of energy from renewable sources, a major upgrade of the Liège high-voltage network is needed in order to continue meeting the needs of society and address future energy challenges.

With the 150-kV Gramme-Rimière line nearing the end of its life, its dismantling has been made possible thanks to the implementation of key Elia grid upgrade projects in the region. Elia has been granted the planning permit to dismantle the line.

Built in 1933, the 150-kV Gramme-Rimière line connects the Gramme substation in Huy to the Rimière substation in Neupré.

Comprising 46 pylons, the line stretches 14.7 km and crosses the municipal territory of Huy, Modave, Nandrin, Tinlot and Neupré.

As a socially responsible company, Elia is deeply committed to the environment. It contributes actively to the energy transition and is particularly concerned with preserving biodiversity. It also works closely with local authorities, local residents and all local stakeholders affected by its infrastructure projects as it expands and upgrades its grid.

Elia pays particular attention to the proper execution of its projects and to the environment in which the works are carried out. Procedures are implemented for each step with a view to limiting the impact on fauna, flora, mobility and any nearby residents.

The project site will move from west to east. Work will begin in February 2022 and will run throughout the year.

The project will take place in multiple stages:

• Lopping and clearance work may be required at some points along the route so that heavy equipment can access the project site. This is done in consultation with the respective land owners and operators.
• After surveying the area with the respective land owners and/or operators, temporary access roads are built for the intermittent traffic needed to carry out the work.
• The conductors are removed section by section and immediately rewound using pulling and braking machines.
• The pylons are dismantled and the materials taken away by lorry.
• The pylon foundations are removed from the ground and taken away by lorry.

• As soon as the project is finished, the temporary access roads are dismantled and the land is restored to its original state. All waste from the site is collected and taken to an accredited waste processing centre. A final survey of the area around the site is then carried out.

The progress of the works depends on the weather, accessibility, the obtaining of local permits and so on.

Local residents will be contacted and kept up to date on how the project is progressing.
