Ensure grid reliability
The new underground connection linking the Braine-l’Alleud and Oisquercq electrical substations will allow for greater reliability of the entire Walloon Brabant high-voltage electricity grid of which it will be part.

Continue to contribute to the security of electricity supply
The Elia grid is unique in that it is meshed. This means that each high voltage substation is connected to at least two connections. This feature enables Elia to continue contributing to security of supply even in the event of a fault or maintenance on one of the connections. With the construction of the Braine-l’Alleud–Oisquercq connection, this security of supply will therefore be enhanced.

The proposed route takes into account local territorial considerations and respects the environment and surroundings in which the project will be carried out.

The proposed route connects the electrical substation at Braine-l’Alleud to the one at Oisquercq by crossing the towns and municipalities of Braine-l’Alleud, Braine-Le-Château, Ittre and Tubize over a total length of approximately 12 km.

As a socially responsible company, Elia is very committed to environmental issues. Elia actively contributes to the energy transition and pays particular attention to safeguarding biodiversity. We also develops our grid while establishing close collaborations with local authorities, local residents and all local partners involved in our infrastructure projects.

Elia pays particular attention to the proper execution of its projects and to the environment in which the works are carried out. Procedures are put in place for each stage, thus limiting the impact on fauna, flora, mobility and for local residents.

As part of the Braine-l’Alleud–Oisquercq project, an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and an Appropriate Assessment (AA) were carried out by an independent consulting engineering firm approved by Wallonia. These two documents study and evaluate the effects of the project on the environment and provide objective recommendations for this project.

• January - February 2022: Presentation to the municipalities prior to the application for the urban development permit
• May - June 2022: Application for the permit at the SPW
• June 2022: Processing of the dossier by the municipalities
• June 2022: Organisation of the information sessions at Braine-le-Château
• Late 2022: Theoretical delivery of the permit by the SPW
• Early 2023: Start of the works
• Late 2023 - early 2024: End of the works
